Heat shrink tubing is used for protection, insulation, and to prevent strain on wiring and cables. Both custom single wall and dual wall tubing provide protection, but each have various benefits depending on the environment in which it is used.
What Is Single Wall Heat Shrink Tubing?
Single-wall heat shrink tubing is reliable and strong plastic layer that can be applied to cabling and components to insulate wires and protect them against abrasion and strain. Think of it as “indoor” heat shrink. It is best used for electrical wires or cabling that is unlikely to be exposed to outside elements like water, moisture, chemicals, etc.
What Is Adhesive-Lined Dual Wall Heat Shrink Tubing?
Dual wall heat shrink tubing is lined with an adhesive glue to ensure the inside of the tube seals tightly around the wiring. This provides a secure cover to prevent moisture from entering the tube as well as doubling the strength of the protective layer. As heat is applied to dual wall heat shrink tubing, the adhesive flows along the tubing as it is melted. This provides an extra tight fit and defensive shield.
Dual-wall adhesive lined heat shrink tubing can be used for any project that sees wiring and cables exposed to environmental factors. This protective sealant prevents water, abrasive fluids, and chemicals from damaging the wiring. It is best used for “outside” applications where protection from corrosion or a firm seal is the main goal.
Different Levels of Adhesive-Lined Heat Shrink Tubing
- Thick Wall – Thermafix® ST
The Thermafix® ST is a thick wall product available as adhesive-lined or as a non-adhesive option. It is commonly used for underground and underwater protection. This meltable liner protects against abrasion and provides strain relief for the wiring. It has a shrink ration of 3:1.
- Semi-Rigid – Thermafix® Plus
The semi-rigid Thermafix® Plus is a useful in the automotive field. Heating the tubing forces the adhesive to flow and melt along the cables to prevent fluids, moisture, and abrasion from damaging the wires. It has a shrink ratio of 4:1.
- Flexible – Thermafix® DWP
For a flexible heat shrink tubing, the Thermafix® DWP is used in the electrical and mechanical industries. As an added protective layer, this can be applied for sealing splices and connectors. It has a shrink ratio of 3:1.
